The Taxonline Network
History
The beginning of the Network took place at the end of 2005 with nine botanical and zoological
collections in the State. From August 2008 to the end of 2010 the Network expanded to the
State Universities of Maringá and Ponta Grossa.
In 2013, the Taxonline Network underwent another expansion process and since that time it houses the collections of biological cultures including collections of microbial cultures
with the creation of the first “Center for Collections of Biological Cultures of the State of Paraná”. Also, at the end of 2013 the Network became part of the Brazilian Biodiversity Information System - SIBBR, a program of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation (MCTI), thus joining the Global Biodiversity Facility Information - GBIF, an international system of informatization of collections.
For about 14 years, the Network has been organized in terms of infrastructure and the information on the collections has been placed in databases. We are at a different moment with
the beginning of a program for the qualification of personnel and identification with the validation of taxonomic groups, in which there are no specialist taxonomists in the institutions.
Below you can reach the timeline with the main events.
Goals
-
Modernization and adaptation of the infrastructure in order to guarantee the increase
and perpetuation of biological collections in the State.
-
Implementation of databases for the computerization of specimen information, aiming to
make available, mainly of primary type data, via the Internet in integrated networks
(SIBBR, SpeciesLink, GBIF).
-
Expansion of the identification and recognition of scientific material deposited in the
botanical, microbiological and zoological collections of the State of Paraná.
-
Improvement and expansion of the routine collections activities.
-
Evaluation of geographic and taxonomic gaps to increase collections and expand
collections in the State in areas that are poorly registered in the collections.
Main stages of the workflow
Identification and organization of the collection and collection infrastructure
Digitization and availability
of the information
